How does Lubbock ISD identify students for gifted services?

All second graders currently take a short screener in the fall semester to predict potential in verbal, nonverbal and quantitative thinking skills. Any students meeting a qualifying screener score is automatically referred for further evaluation. Students in any grade level K-12 can also be referred by a parent/guardian, teacher, community member, or themselves.

Once a referral is submitted or the student meets the screener qualifying score, the campus G/T coordinator will request permission to evaluate for services from the parent. This document must be signed and returned to the school to continue with the G/T evaluation.

The G/T evaluation consists of two quantitative assessments (usually ability and creativity) that the student will take after permission is obtained, and 1-2 qualitative assessments, the teacher and/or parent surveys, also completed after permission.

The G/T coordinator on the campus will compile all data from the evaluations and present the information to the campus G/T selection committee. Based on the committee's decision, the parent of the referred student will receive a letter stating if the student was identified as G/T.

Transfer to or from Lubbock ISD

Transfer from another district to LISD

  • Lubbock ISD will accept documentation and results of identification for G/T services from the previous school attended. The campus G/T committee will review the student's records to determine placement and/or conduct assessment procedures as necessary. If the student continues services in Lubbock ISD, services will ensue after all documentation has been received and reviewed.

Transfer within LISD to a new campus

  • Lubbock ISD students that change campuses will continue to receive services based on the available services at the new campus.

Furlough

Lubbock ISD may place a student on a furlough who is unable to maintain satisfactory performance or whose educational needs are not being met within the structure of gifted and talented services. A furlough may be initiated by the campus/district, the parent, or the student. In accordance with the Board-approved program, a furlough shall be granted for specified reasons and for a specified period of time. At the end of a furlough, the student may continue with gifted/talented services, be placed on another furlough, or be exited from the program. (EHBB Local)

Exit

Student performance during services shall be monitored. A student’s progress may be reevaluated at any time by request of the parents, teacher or principal.

  1. Campus G/T committee conducts an initial conference with the student and parent/guardian.

  2. Specific goals/tasks that the student must accomplish with timelines are established.

  3. Test scores and class work is reviewed.

  4. Campus G/T committee, student, and parent/guardian hold a second conference to review the data collected.

  5. If a parent requests their child be removed from G/T services, the G/T committee shall grant the request.

  6. Once a student is exited from G/T services, he/she must adhere to the identification procedures and exhibit educational need to be readmitted.

Reassessment

It may be requested that a student receiving G/T services is reassessed. Reassessment of a student in gifted and talented services is based on a student's performance in response to services. If a student is reassessed, it can occur no more than once in elementary grades, once in middle school grades and once in high school grades.
