Frequently Asked Questions

Who can I contact to find out about Gifted and Talented on my child's campus?

On most campuses, the G/T Coordinator is the counselor. The G/T Coordinator accepts referrals, schedules identification testing, sends correspondence to parents, and is the head of the G/T identification committee for the campus. This person will also put you in contact with the best person to answer your particular questions about G/T if they do not know.

What department is Gifted and Talented under in LISD?

Gifted and Talented is a section of the office of Advanced Academics, in addition to Advanced Placement (AP) courses, dual-credit and On-Ramps courses, and academic competitions (UIL - HS, UIL A+ - MS, Academic Decathlon/Octathlon/Pentathlon, Destination Imagination)

When are students identified as Gifted and Talented?

Students in grades 1-12 can be referred at any time, with testing for these grades occurring in the Fall semester each year. All 2nd graders are screened without a referral, but will only be tested with parent permission.

Students in Kindergarten can be referred at any time, with testing occurring in the Spring semester each year.

How can I refer my child for GT testing?

A parent, teacher or other community member can refer a child using the GT Referral Form.

If my child begins receiving services, do they have to test again next year?

Once a student begins GT services in Lubbock ISD, they remain identified for services until they leave the district.

We moved to Lubbock ISD from another district. Will my child continue receiving services?

The Texas State Plan says that districts have a choice to re-evaluate the student or use the previous district's data to inform the decision for placement. Lubbock ISD requests the records from the previous district. If we would like to re-evaluate, your child's counselor or the office of Advanced Academics will contact you and walk you through the process.

If my child does not qualify to receive GT services, may he or she be referred for testing again?

Yes. Children may be referred and evaluated once per year.
