It is with great pride that I welcome you to J.T. Hutchinson, an IB Middle Years World School.
J.T. Hutchinson is an award winning school with a long standing reputation for excellence in academics, athletics and the fine arts. The learning environment at Hutch is secure, inviting and encouraging. Ethnic diversity is shared and celebrated.
College and career readiness is the focus of the Lubbock Independent School District, and Hutchinson students set the bar. Hutchinson is the only IB Middle School in West Texas, feeding into Lubbock High School which offers the IB Diploma program. Hutchinson teachers use inquiry-based instruction and best practice strategies with students in all of their 8 IB required classes. Students attending Hutchinson do not need prior IB experience to attend. Hutchinson offers advanced classes as well as opportunities for students to earn high school credit in Spanish 1, Spanish 2 and Algebra 1.
Our Fine Arts offerings are as unique as the students we serve, including; Dance, Photography, Art, Creative Writing, Band, Choir, Orchestra, Digital Media and Animation, Visual Production, Robotics, Pentathlon and many more! Students have the opportunity to join amazing clubs and organizations such as; Junior Historians, Robotics, FCA, Student Council, TMSCA UIL Math and Science, NJHS, NJAHS and Chess Club, just to name a few.
The IB Middle Years program is a framework for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students which requires 8 core subject areas of instruction each year of middle school: Math, Sciences, Individuals and Societies, Language and Literature, Language Acquisitions, Physical and Health Education, Design and the Arts. Students learn the IB Learner Profile, and work to emulate the 10 attributes as they progress each year. All 8th grade students complete a Community Project during their 3rd year of the program before moving to high school.
IB interdisciplinary units of study are designed by each team of teachers for depth and richness of content. Service and international mindedness is incorporated into each learning experience. It is my hope that students become learners and leaders during their middle school careers, as they realize the impact they can have on our community and even more importantly, the world.
Teachers and staff members of Hutchinson Middle School take great pride in student achievement and success. Individual student progress is measured and monitored to ensure maximum achievement throughout the school year. Students living outside of the Hutchinson attendance area must submit a transfer application, (found on the district website) during the month of January to be considered for enrollment.
I am thrilled to be a part of such a fantastic learning community and I invite you to come and visit anytime.
Michael Stewart, Principal
