Hutchinson Middle School Specialty Programs

History

J.T. Hutchinson Middle School opened in 1948 as a Junior High school serving grades 7, 8 and 9.  Since 1980, "Hutch" has been THE "Fine Arts" destination for students who excel in academics and the fine arts.  Students living outside of the Hutchinson attendance zone who meet transfer requirements are eligible to submit an application for admission. LISD transitioned to middle schools in 2006, moving 9th graders to high schools and 6th graders to middle schools.  In 2015, Hutchinson became an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program Candidate school, and was authorized in 2016.  Hutchinson is currently  an authorized International Baccalaureate Middle Years World School.  Students who attend Hutchinson are in the Lubbock High School feeder system.  Elementary feeders to Hutchinson include Roscoe Wilson Elementary and Ramirez Elementary, which are both authorized IB Primary Years Program World Schools.  Although there is usually a waiting list each year, students and parents who attend the Hutchinson Open House readily complete and turn in an application as soon as they are accepted in order to become a part of this amazing learning community.  Families choose Hutchinson when they are searching for a public school because it has the "feel" of a private school.

Mission Statement

The Administration, faculty, staff and parents of Hutchinson Middle School work collaboratively to support student learning through integrated units of study and inquiry based problem solving.  Hutchinson has a diverse student population, representing more than 28 world languages.  Ethnic and cultural differences are shared and celebrated.  Students learn the importance of contributing to the global community through participation in service-oriented activities with a focus on international mindedness.

Accolades

Hutchinson has been a "Texas Honor Roll School" for the last 12 years.  The T.E.A. Distinction Designations were created in 2013 and Hutchinson has been one of the ONLY middle schools to receive all SEVEN each year.

What is the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program?

Hutchinson teachers write their own IB units of study which incorporate the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.  The IB requires additional components in each unit of study such as: Global Contexts, Statement of Inquiry, Factual, Conceptual and Debatable questioning, Approaches to Learning and the Learner Profile attributes, to name a few.
