Special Olympics
Special Olympics Mission:
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics is designed to give students with disabilities the opportunity to compete in sports with their same-age peers.
Special Olympics Texas is a year-round movement, holding more than 300 competitions annually on area, regional and state levels. Event divisions are based on age, gender and ability level to give athletes an equal chance to win. Each participant receives a medal or ribbon following their events.
The VTC participates in the following Special Olympics sports:
On March 23, 2024, the VTC 5-on-5 basketball team represented the VTC in the Area 18 Special Olympics basketball competition in Odessa, TX and brought back a silver medal!
On December 15, 2023, Special Olympics athletes from the Vocational Transition Center earned and received their letter jackets last Friday at their second annual letterman ceremony, recognizing their achievements through their time in the program. VTC staff, leadership, and proud parents were invited to help honor these students before the holiday break.
