AVID is more than an elective, the practices are embraced throughout all classrooms at Irons. Our teachers learn to implement strategies that help prepare students to be organized, to study and take an active role in their choices that will be the stepping stone into their future.
Every year Irons AVID hosts a family night as well as a college & career night. Each event provides information about AVID, provides resources from local organizations and colleges, has games & activities to enjoy and of course there's food.
AVID classes take at least one field trip to places like Coronado high school, Texas Tech University, Wayland Baptist University, South Plains College, or Lubbock Christian University.
Teachers coordinate visits for students to volunteer at the nearby elementary, Whiteside.
Students of all grades may sign up and interview to add AVID as a selection of their courses during the spring semester.
"Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a series of courses that prepare students for college readiness and success. Students receive instruction using a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth. Additionally, students engage in activities around college and career opportunities and explore their own student agency, giving students voice and often choice in how they learn. "
