Academic Resources

One of the primary roles of a school counselor is to provide acadmeic support and guidance to students as they move through high school and transition to life after high school. We strive to keep current resources readily available for both students and parents.

Counselors held a freshman parent meeting on December 18th, 2023. If you were unable to attend, you can view the slides below. Please don't hesitate to contact us if we can answer questions or help in any way.

Taking Courses as Pass / Fail

Students may take designated coursework as pass/fail by declaring their intent in writing prior to the end of the first nine weeks of class (fall semester) and prior to the end of the third nine weeks of class (spring semester), provided the following criteria are met:

  1. The student is enrolled in 10th, 11th or 12th grades

  2. The student has a minimum grade point average of 4.0 or higher.

  3. The student has fulfilled graduation requirements in the area of the pass/fail course.

  4. The course is not weighted.

    • Those achieving a grade of 70 or higher shall be awarded credit, but a numerical grade will not be recorded on the transcript nor included in the student’s grade point average.

    • The pass/fail grade (P or F)  will be indicated on the semester final grade.

    • By taking a non-weighted class pass/fail, this grade is not calculated in the grade point average. Thus, the student is not penalized for taking a course that does not receive extra grade points.

Eligible students should get a pass/fail form in the fall of each year and return it prior to the deadline. Spring courses will automatically be included as pass/fail should the student's eligibility remain in place, unless the student notifies the counselor requesting to opt out of the pass/fail opportunity. Feel free to reach out to your counselor with questions.

Pass/Fail will no longer be applicable beginning with Cohort 2027 and beyond.

GPA & Rank Changes

(Beginning with the Class of 2027)

Lubbock ISD is full of choice! To achieve a high GPA, students tend to take weighted classes, causing them to opt out of other courses they may be interested in. Beginning with the class of 2027, students will be able to take any elective they want, without lowering their GPA .

  • Cumulative GPA determines rank. 16 courses (32 semesters) in the subjects of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies have the potential to carry weight. The top four courses in each core subject plus unweighted credit for all other courses equals your GPA.

  • Other courses outside of the 16 do not have any weight even if they are AP, IB, dual credit, etc.
