Theory of Knowledge (ToK)

The ToK is a course unique to Lubbock High School and only available to I.B. Diploma students. This intro to philosophy course is a cornerstone of I.B., its implications reaching every discipline students are studying and its applications carrying over to both college and career.

"TOK is a course about critical thinking and inquiring into the process of knowing, rather than about learning a specific body of knowledge. It does this by encouraging students to analyze knowledge claims and explore knowledge questions. " - I.B. Organization

In other words: "How do you come to know what you claim to know?" - Mr. Timmons

Internal Assessments (IA)

IB assessment procedures measure the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills in fulfilling these goals, for example:

  • analysing and presenting information

  • evaluating and constructing arguments

  • solving problems creatively.

  • retaining knowledge

  • understanding key concepts

  • applying standard methods.

The IA is one way IB measures a student's ability in each content area.

The IA can be a paper, project, oral exam, workbook, or series of experiments, depending on the individual IB class.

  • Oral work in languages

  • fieldwork in geography

  • laboratory work in the sciences

  • investigations in math

  • artistic performances and portfolios
