This week, athletes from across the South Plains gathered for a SOTX Unified Area Track Meet. This meet featured the five following events: the 400m, 100m, girls 4x100 relay, boys 4x100 relay, shot put, and long jump.

The top three teams in each event earned a spot in the upcoming Regional Meet in Abilene, and our very own Coronado High School team gave an impressive fourth place performance. While the competition was intense, the focus was not only on the results but on having fun and fostering a sense of community with others.

The Special Olympics Unified Programs bring together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team. The Special Olympics adopted Unified Programs in 1989. Since then the initiative includes almost all Special Olympics Texas sports, providing a variety of sports to improve physical fitness, sharpen skills, and have fun!

Congratulations to everyone who participated, and best of luck to those advancing to the Regional Meet!
